BigPicture Competition

BigPicture International Photography Competition

In 2012, I founded the BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition which is now run by the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco California. It is one of the leading nature photo competitions in the world. In fact, it was been recognized as one of the top 10 photography competitions of any genre anywhere in the world in the Photoshelter Guide to photography competitions three years running. It even beat out the likes of National Geographic, Nikon and the Smithsonian. BigPicture offers over $17,000 in annual cash prizes, a chance to be exhibited on the public floor of the science museum each summer and an opportunity to be discovered by some of the top photo editors in the world.

Project Management

As the competition founder, I authored and pitched the concept to the leadership team at the California Academy of Sciences before recruiting an amazing team of people to carry the project forward. The Academy’s creative director served as a key partner for launching the competition as she headed up the design of the annual exhibit for the winning images which are prominently displayed on the public floor of the museum each summer to over 100k visitors from around the world. As the founder and principal competition manager, I was responsible for:

    • Authoring and pitching the original concept
    • Assembling a team at the Academy to lead the project
    • Designing and managing the competition website
    • Launching an integrated social media and email automation system
    • Recruiting and leading a world-class jury
    • Authoring the Competition CMS for entry and payment management
    • Integrating the EcoSee competition judging platform for BigPicture use
    • Handling all marketing and promotions for the competition
    • Developing a cloud-based CMS to collect and deliver exhibit content to the Academy

Inspired by Awe and Wonder

BigPicture encourages photographers from around the world to contribute their work to this competition that both celebrates and illustrates the rich diversity of life on Earth and inspires action to protect and conserve it through the power of imagery. Chaired by award-winning conservation photographer Suzi Eszterhas, this competition welcomes high-quality nature, wildlife and conservation images and is open to all photographers.
